Closeup ladie's handsI remember that first phone call, that first seller response to one of our online marketing ads. That call became a beaming affirmation early in our careers that we had invested wisely in our educations and that yes! We were in the right business. Where else can you be your own boss, make great money and help people in their hour of need? It all started with a simple text, “My homes for sale in Kona Hawaii.”

“My homes for sale in Kona Hawaii.”

I called her and a thin voice answered the line. Her name was Wilma and she was about to lose her house to the bank. She told me a sad story. Her husband had passed away from cancer causing her to tumble out of sobriety into her current state. She hadn’t paid her mortgage in four or five years and wasn’t sure if she was still the owner of her house. Wilma was frightened and embarrassed. She said repeatedly, “I’m so scared,” while she counted her tale. “I’d just like to spend one more Christmas here.”

I listened to Wilma, offering an occasional, “I’m sorry,” or “I understand.” Her voice was trembling and she sounded confused. My training had taught me how to market for and then gather information from distressed sellers – how to close deals. But now I was at a loss. I felt sad and impotent. I knew I should gather as much information as I could and set up an appointment to go see the property today and try and get it under contract if it looked like a deal. But what I really wanted was to help Wilma feel safe.

People Before Profit

It was already late in the day and I had no idea who to call or what to do.  Nonetheless, I told Wilma that I would help her and promised to call back the following day. Where was the training manual for this one?

I sat there at my desk for a few moments and then I remembered, Bob. He was head broker at a big Real Estate Brokerage in town. We had met him at an open house and liked him right away. He had impressed us with tales of his 25-plus-year commitment to sobriety and about how he liked to give back by helping others get clean. We had both agreed that he was the kind of broker that we would like to work with. With his many years of experience, he was just the guy to best handle this type of distressed homes for sale in Kona Hawaii.

Don’t Forget to Get Out of Your Comfort Zone!

Our Mentors at Fortune Builders and CT Homes, say that in order to grow your business it is important to remember:

This seemed like the perfect opportunity to practice both.

The following day I called Bob, re-introduced myself and reminded him where we had met. I took a breath and segued into the story about Wilma. He listened intently and when I finished, he took down my name and thanked me.

“It’s getting hard to find people with humanity these days.”

He assured me he would make some phone calls and find Wilma a female mentor in the AA program. I told Bob he was an inspiration and thanked him.

I called Wilma back and told her that Bob would be giving her a call. She sounded relieved and thanked me for my troubles.

“No trouble at all.”

Remember That This Too Shall Pass

I reminded her that this too shall pass and asked her to be kind to her self and got off the phone. It felt good. I had made a personal connection with Bob and helped a sister in need. This seemed like an excellent ROI for a few phone calls.

It seems that there is a misconception, warranted or not, that Real Estate Investors are a heartless, greedy and ruthless bunch who only see bottom lines and don’t care about families and neighborhoods. We even had a response to one of our we-buy-homes ads ask whether we really tried to help people or just wanted to rip them off?

To him and others I would say, give us the chance to change these misconceptions. We commit to our Mission Statement:

With a hands-on approach to solving solutions, delivering value, and rejuvenating communities, our goal is to help people by empowering them to take control of their financial lives. To this end we commit to ethical behavior, open-mindedness, transparency and creating long-term relationships built on trust and mutual benefit.

My name is Zachary Nathan and together with my wife Iris Rosa Lami we started Craft Realty. Please make us your first choice for homes for sale in Kona Hawaii.
